"Becoming Jane" in theatres August 9!

Today one of my fellow Janeites alerted me to the fact that a new Jane Austen biopic will be coming to American theatres later this summer. So take a peek at this article and mark your calendars now!

The English (and the Irish, the Australians, and even the Swedes) have stolen a march on us--the movie screened for them at least a month ago. (No wonder I was confused by the official website, with its release date of March 9; and thanks to Wikipedia for having all the answers!)

Anne Hathaway will be playing the role of Jane Austen, with James McAvoy--who was Mr. Tumnus in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"--playing Thomas LeFroy, who is widely believed to have been a serious suitor for Jane's hand.

There's been some controversy about the casting of an American in the title role (not to mention her accent), in the emphasis given to the importance of romance upon Jane's writing, in the historical accuracy of a bush blooming next to the Austens' cottage...well, you can find it all on the internet, including a YouTube trailer.

Personally, I just find it amazing--and wonderful--that Jane Austen still inspires such intense debate. Isn't it incredible? Nearly two hundred years after her death, and she's still got everyone talking.
